Prior to living in Closter, David lived in Alpine on Old Closter Dock Rd. as indicated on an old map on file in Hack. Library. After David's death (from paralysis - stroke?) Jane moved to Brookhaven, Long Island, NY. David's will was dated 8/18/1887 and probated 2/17/1891 (Berg. Cty. Sur. Rec. Bk. T, P.365) His heirs were Widow Jane of Closter, Children: David Van Valen of Brooklyn; Catherine, wife of John W. Conklin of Alpine; Joseph Van Valen of Cresskill; Sarah, wife of Cyrus Wilks of Alpine; George Van Valen of Demarest; Maria, wife of Agustus E. Short of Closter; and Jennie Van Valen (age 15 years) of Closter; Granddaughter, Josie Van Valen (age 9 years) of Brooklyn, only child of dec's son, Gilbert. Maria had already been given an adjoining lot to David's property before he died. When he died, each heir received a share of the remaining property. When Jane moved out of state, the heirs contested her administration of the estate and wanted her to post bonds. Maria got a realty firm in NY to go to each heir and buy their share of the property at various sums and each deed is a part of the Bjorkmans title search. When the realty firm had title to all parcels of the property, then Maria purchased the property which joined her land and lived in the house that David had owned. |
