NoteHe
On 27 May 1823 Chapman once again prepared an appeal through the Court. He was now 64 years old and still living in Riverhead. In this new document, Chapman states he enlisted "about the twentieth of December" 1776 "in the company commanded by Captain Samuel Sacket in the Regiment commanded by Colonel Philip Cortland in the line of the State of New York". (This differs from his original application in which he indicated that these men were his officers following his re-enlistment.) He also states that his discharge occurred at or near Newburgh, New York, and says that previous to the 20 December 1776 enlistment he had enlisted and served two campaigns of about ten months each under Captain Griffing and Colonel Henry B. Livingston as he had stated in his declarations of 30 May 1818 and to which he refers. He says he received a pension and the pension certificate is dated 7 September 1819, number 15098, but that since then his name "has been dropt from the pension list on account of his property". 11 National Archives, Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-land Warrant Application Files, M804-750.

He goes on to state that pursuant to the more recent 1 May 1820 Act he was a citizen of the U.S. on 18 March 1818 (date of the first Act) and that since then he had not disposed of any property with intent to diminish it in order to comply with provisions of the Act. He then continues by noting changes in inventory of his real estate and personal property, and explains that he transferred his 250 acres which were mortgaged for a principal and interest total of $2680. to Hannah Woodhull, holder of the mortgage in March 1823 in satisfaction of the debt, and that he transferred 30 acres mortgaged to Abraham Post, value $563., to Abraham Post to satisfy that mortgage. 22 National Archives, Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-land Warrant Application Files, M804-750.

Mortgages transferred ________________________

Regarding his personal property he states that it has been worn out or sold to satisfy debts or applied for family support. He says he is now a daily labor and has a lameness in both arms preventing him from pursuing his ordinary business. Pension Application Records, _________________

Here he digresses to identify his family members, mentioning his wife, Lydia, age about 58 years, his daughters Mary, age about 22 years, Elizabeth age about twenty years and Bethia age about thirteen years, and his wife's son, Charles Lane, age about eleven years, stating that none of them contribute to his support and that he therefore needs assistance from his country or public charity. Pension Application Records, _______________

At this point an updated inventory and values is presented, very similar to the earlier list, with a total value of $59.33 as of 27 May 1823, and a certification by the Court. Pension Application Records, ______________

These papers were sent from Drown Meadow, New York on 2 June, 1823 to John C. Calhoun, Secretary of War, Washington City, District of Columbia and they are marked Rec'd. 6 June 1823. Of interest is the fact that the postage was "Free". A cover letter dated 29 May 1823, requests a "renewal of his pension".
on May 27, 1823 at Riverhead, Suffolk County, NY.
NoteHe

He states his family consists of Lydia, age about 58 years, daughters Mary (22), Elizabeth (20), Bethia (13) and his wife’s son, Charles Lane (11). 11 National Archives, Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-land Warrant Application Files, M804-750.
